Final Shoot for Emcee

Overall I feel this is my proudest shoot. I feel over the moon about the images that came out. All my worries before this shoot seemed to go away as I was fully prepared.

 

In the first image is my portrait image. I'm really pleased with the symmetry of the mask. When I first applied the black it was not symmetrical so by using a really fine brush I had to try and make both sides equal and it was very hard and tested my patience. But in the end I felt I did a good job. Im happy with the blue in the hair I didn't think it would show up on the camera but it did and I feel like it was blended in well. I like how you can see in detail the white eyelashes and eyebrows. It's really nice to see the contrast between the black and white and how something so simple can make such an impact.

 



What I'd change....

 

Well looking at the image below I would change a couple of things. Firstly the black in the sideburns I can see they should have been blended in better. It's a very noticeable line and that shouldn't be there. Also the blue in the hair stops abruptly on one side. I should have blended I out towards the ear.

 

 

 

I really likes this close up image you can see in more detail the black line and how its not a perfect straight line. But I'm glad it isn't perfect otherwise there would be nothing to improve on. I could have blended more and thinking back to it I felt I did loads of blending but now I know that I should have done even more.

The lips- The texture I love but its not symmetrical. I should have used a finer brush to do the cupids bow but I like the mixture of blue and red. I used a mascara wand to apply the colours. I like how the lips and the hair colour match. Makes the whole look come together instead of random parts.

Overall I'm happy with the look but there are some things to improve on. I feel like this look really portrayed the image I had of Emcee in my head. I feel like if there was an Emcee today he would look like this.

Evaluation

 

Overall I felt Alice did an amazing job or recreating my design. She followed good instruction and together I felt like we made a good team. Her application of the make up was really good she asked me to move my head and checked throughout if I was comfortable. She did an impressive job of getting both eyebrows symmetrical and the lips were very good. The one thing Alice struggled on was the eyeshadow, I felt she didn't quite manage to get the colours right on both side and the blending could have been better. Her time management throughout was perfect we finished with 10 minutes to spare which allowed us plenty of time to get the right shot. As shown the images she could of made the contouring a bit stronger so it would have shown up on the camera. However the base foundation was put on really well and the finishing touch was perfect. Her hygiene and general appearance was very professional and I felt at ease when she was working on me. My face charts and hair designs were made very clear so she could easily follow them and if she had

When Alice came to me with her design for our practice I was quite nervous as she wanted me to make a moustache from scratch and this was a new technique for me. I found it quite difficult during the practice to get the moustache equal on both sides. I also found doing the eye make up difficult as it had to be symmetrical on both eyes and if it wasn't, it was going to stand out. When it came to the assessment I was still very nervous even though I knew what I was doing. I was worried I was going to mess it up. But looking at the images I'm happy with the final shot. I felt I did the make up and hair to best I could. And I also tried to be as professional as I could. I asked the model if he was comfortable and hopefully made him feel at ease. The hardest part of the assessment was using the duo glue on the moustache as the hairs kept sticking to my fingers and I couldn't apply it neatly. I was also nervous about using a hair dryer on it as I was worried it would mess it up but it went smoothly in the end. Alice's designs were really easy to follow she had written out step by step what to do and also her face charts were very clear.

 This is my final moodboard for Emcee. I feel here's a good mixture of contemporary and historical images to start to get ideas for my final design. I have looked at air from the 1930s and from the Blitz Kids. I also looked into the make up from the Rocky Horror Picture show and I enjoyed watching some clips from the show. I also looked at Berlin in the 1930s to get a feel for the architecture and surrounding to get a feel what it was like then to see whether it could inspire me for my design. I also looked at Marilyn Mason as he is a contemporary show case that wears extravagant make up and clothing he reminded me a bit of Emcee. I also researched Lee Bowery and Steve Strange who both were the original Blitz Kids from the party scene in the 1980s. I feel like this moodboard has helped me come up with some ideas for my Emcee.

Drawing Practice

 

 

Learning how to draw lines by holding the pencil differently. This helped us to learn how to hold the pencil to get the most controlled lines. When holding the pencil further down you get a darker line but when holding the pencil at the top you get lighter lines.

Drawing some eye shapes. Experimenting with different lines around the eyes. These a rough sketches just getting the correct shape and looking into less detail rather than more.

 Couple of portraits of a two middle aged couple. Looking at the different lines compared to younger people. Practicing the facial features. Rough sketches just to get the correct shape.

 Self portrait. I felt I got the face shape correct with my square jaw and also I have a very long nose. Pretty happy with this drawing.

This was just me playing around using pens and charcoals. Mixing materials together. Trial and error.

B&W Photo challenge

 

 

Black and White Berlin Style

 

 

 Going around Southampton and taking photos was really fun especially trying to find something that interest you and will look like something from the 1930s Berlin era. I like how taking simple photos and making them look extraordinary simply by changing the colour to black and white.

 

The photos below is a mixture of 5 images I found around Southampton which interested me because they were simple day to day experiences but seeing them in black and white made them look unique.

The bottom photo is my favourite the one with the overgrown lamppost. It really stood out to me as it was the only lamp post that had been left and plants had started to overgrow. It had been completely left out and there were no other lamppost near by.

 

Making Comparisons

 

Below is an image of 1930s Berlin and I love it. It looks so old and you real get a feel to what it was like during that era. The first thing that jumped out t me about the image is the building. The structure of the building is unique it has so much detail. Even the windows have lots of detail. There spires coming off it and different coloured bricks it is beautiful. It seems such a simple image but behind this image there was a lot going on in Berlin during this era. Comparing this image and this era to the images I took there's a lot different but the fact that some simple images by making them black and white can make them stand out even more.

Below are the 5 photos from the B&W  challenge. I chose most of the images because I took them at night. I found at night that it seemed a different world with different lighting. Every light stood out and my favourite part of the day is the night time.

 

Final Face chart idea

This is my final face chart idea. I'm happy with this face chart as I've combined all my favourite ideas from my experimental face charts into one. The idea of the mask coming down from the hair line and meeting in the middle adds a certain mystery to the character. I also like the contouring more. Also the lips are really fun to play around with. My main concerns are the lips might look messy and not very professional. The mask might not be symmetrical on either side so I've come up with a plan to use masking tape to make sure I have straight edges. I know the eyebrows will show through as I experimented with them in my last shoot.

Face Charts

 

 

 

 

 

This first face chart was inspired by one of my images on my moodboard. What you can't see on the face chart is that the blue on the face would go up into the hair so it all blends together. I liked the idea of covering one side of the face. Almost like he's hiding. The materials used were kryolan foundation for the base. The rosy cheeks using illamasque powder blush. The eye I used the urban decay naked pallete and the blue was from the supracolor pallete. I used blending brushes to blend the edges. I felt that the main focus was the blu on the face which didn't allow me to really do anything else otherwise the face would look too busy.

 

The face chart above was my second idea. I started really focusing on blending. I liked the idea of doing big eyebrows. I felt that Emcee has very prominent eyebrows in the film 'Cabaret'. I also wanted to do dark lips but looking at the face chart I feel that it looks too gothic and not playful enough to go with the 'Club Culture' scene. The materials I used were Kryolan foundation for the base. Suprecolor black for the eyebrows and lips. And contouring with a mixture of Illamasque powder blusher and Nars bronzer. Overall I don't feel like this face chart really portrays the character Emcee. 

After watching the face chart tutorial it really helped me to create some face charts from scratch. As you can see below my face charts have been improved and I have hand drawn them which helps me really create different faces.

 



 

The face chart above was really me playing around with face charts and using different materials I wouldn't normall use on a face chart. I did lots of contouring using Nars Bronzer and my Kryolan pallete. I liked creating the eyebrows and seeing what shape I could make. I used the supracolor pallete black to do them. I also used the same pallete but in blue to do the eyes. And the lips I did lots of shading and I used lip liner. I felt looking at the face chart it didn't really stand out to me and also felt it was too feminine for Emcee. I wanted to do my mask idea to show a different side to Emcee.

 

 

This is the last of my experimental face charts. I feel like m ideas are starting to come together. I really like the idea of black across the face like a mask and then blending down onto the face. The look is too gothic with the lips and after looking at Lee Bowery I want to add some colour to Emcee. I want to stick to the mask idea but also want to create something fun too. For my final face chart I hope to get the right mixture for Emcee to show his true character.

1930s Meets the Blitz Kids

 

1930s Hair

 

 

The image below is an old 1930s advertisement for hair. As you can see from both the images below the men had a very distinct paring and often had finger waves in the hair. The hair was always very neat and gelled into place. Even though this is a popular hair style for the 1930s I found it is quit dull. The character Emcee is a eccentric character and having such neat and tidy hair is a juxtaposition to his character. I like the idea of having a distinct parting as its very prominent.

Blitz Kids


When researching hair styles for the Blitz Kids I found Steve Strange. He was part of the band called Visage and was a big part of the clubbing scene in the 1980s. In the styles below I like the first image with the hair flicking across the face it adds a bit of eccentricity to the hair. I also like adding colour to make the hair more prominent. The 1980s style was all about who could be more extreme than the other. It was always about being shocking to the public like a constant cat walk always going on. Men dressing in the most outrageous outfits and most outrageous make up. This project has got me really excited about all the possibilities of different hair and make up I can do. I really like the idea of having a prominent parting with curls coming onto the face. Instead of seeing hair and make up separate I hope to connect the two together with matching colours and bringing it down onto the face. Using colour in the hair is a great way to make it stand out more and my model has jet black hair so I was thinking of using the colour blue.

Couple of Hair Ideas

 

Before deciding what model to use I wanted to try out doing a boys hair style on a girl. Firstly you should section the hair making up 3 sections. 2 at the front and one at the back. Then spray the hair with water so its easier to move into shape. The section at the back you can roll over you hand and clip underneath to hide the length of the hair. The two sections at the front need to be wet and then decide on a parting. Normally a male from the 1930s would have a parting quite far over. Once decided one section should be clipped back into the back section. Then the remaining hair needs to be sweeped into a U shape at the front. Using a bi of mouse it helps it stay in place.

Finger Waves

 



I really struggled doing finger waves. I found it hard to get the right angle. Using clips to clips it into place. You have to roll the hair over you finger into the correct circular shape and then place in a clip. I tried several times and as you can see I still struggles. It's something I'm going to need to practice at.

You can see in more detail in this image the direction in which the hair is going. It was really hard to do tight ones. But it was fun to experiment with large and small finger waves.

 I experiment with blocking out the eye brows and seeing if I can do some really fine eyebrows. I was happy with the overall eyebrow shape but the look all together I didn't really like. I didn't feel like I was getting and colour involved and I felt it was quite a simple and dull look. However I did have fun making a large rounded cupids bow on the lip. I also was happy with the contouring and I'm glad it came up on the camera. The eyes only had some mascara and I felt there's so much more I wanted to do. But it was worth experimenting with the lips and eyebrows.

 

This was my second trial and error. I decided to go for the mask look but I felt it wasn't enough. I wanted to blend down more over the eyes. Again I like the lips with rounded cupids bow. With the contouring I I didn't do enough. For next time I want to bring it down onto the cheek bones an over the eyes. Also change the lip colour its too dark.

My Evaluation

 

 My Final images of my Design. I'm very proud of my make up artist Alice Webb. She applied the make up really well and my design instructions were easy for her to follow. Overall I'm really happy with my final look.

 

My biggest worry for this design was definitely the hair. I was worried the wig was too messy so before the assessment I add shine spray to it and brushed through and it seemed to calm it down a bit. Alice is very good at doing smokey eyes so I was happy she was doing them. I also was happy with the shape of the lips. The eyebrows could have been blocked out more so the eyebrows could of been more obviously higher.

 Looking at the photos I would change the contouring. It hasn't shown up on the camera at all and the eyebrows have come out very light compared to the hair. And on my practice before they looked really clear. The base colour is exactly what I wanted it looks really pale which makes the lips and the hair stand out even more.

 

I love this close up image. You can really see the eye make up which also looks quite light on the photos so I know for another time that the make up needs to be darker if I want it to stand out. The lips were done really well and Alice did a very neat job with the lips pencil and the lip stick. I'm glad a chose a red colour instead of a sarker one as I think it would have looked too dark overall.

First Emcee Practice

 

 

After doing my practice look for Emcee I felt happy with some aspects but not happy with others. I was happy that on the photo you can see the texture of the lips which I used a mascara wand to do. I also was happy with the shape of the lips the way it flicks up into a eccentric smile. For next time I hope to make the whole lips more exaggerated and into a better shape. I felt I could do more with hair and that I need to do some more research into that. The mask was a bit of a boring shape so for next time I want to create a triangle at the top and blend more around the face.

With the lips I didn't like how is wasn't symmetrical it looked to messy. So for next time I'm going to draw out a thin outline so I know where to brush the make up on. I liked the white eye lashes as it clashed with the black eyes. Made them stand out more and had a better effects. As when you where a mask the only part you really can see is the eyes.

I painted the eyebrows white as the character Emcee has very rounded and high eyebrows which I wanted to make stand out on my contemporary design. I also feel Emcee exaggerates his facial movements he loves to smile constantly which reminds me a bit of a clown.

 

For my final piece I want to change the hair and add some colour to make it stand out more. I also want to change the shape of the mask around the eyes and contour more on the cheek bones to create a more eccentric look. I also want the lips to be bigger and more symmetrical.

Emcee meets Mytsery of the Masks

So Mysterious

After doing lots of research into Emcee it started to become obvious I wasn't going to learn about his other life which started to become a mystery that made me think of superheroes. I then came to a decision to bring this mysteriousness across in my contemporary make up design. Then an idea came to mind and I thought of doing a mask.
The three images I chose to look at was because of the shape, styles, colour and texture. I wanted to decide which I liked and for what reason so I can incorporate these ideas into my make up design for Emcee.

I looked at fashion masks to keep up with the contemporary idea. I saw this image above and straight away I loved them they were so unique and different. The first photo I liked the two piece mask as it wasn't something I had seen before. It was interesting seeing one piece attached to the face and another hanging off it. But I felt this was too gothic for the idea I had in mine. The image next to it is like a visor I like how the mask drips down the face as if its almost attached to the skin it makes you want to touch the mask. Again its not quite what makes me think of Emcee.

This mask above is an old Italian full face mask. It's very creepy but I like the contrast of red lips on a white background face. The pale face and red lips is very Emcee. But I don't want to do a full mask on the face as I know half of Emcee's life but the other half is a mystery. I was more thinking of doing a mask just covering the eyes.

This final mask I chose to put on this blog is because of the mask shape. I like the idea of the mask covering half the face but also I like the triangle idea at the top and bottom of the mask. It makes it more mysterious instead of having the mask go straight across. It  gives it more edge.

All about Emcee

What does he want?

 

From reading the script and watching the film you start to realise that you don't actually find out a lot about the person Emcee. He is a mystery, we only hear about him at the Kit Kat club where he performs. But you never ready or watch about him outside of the club. His life resolves around the club and entertaining the audience. He obviously loves being surrounded by the Kit Kat girls and genuinely there's an air of happiness for him there. It was like he was born there and grown up there. The fact that you never hear about him outside of the club makes it seem like his living a double life almost like a superhero. Like he's one person in the club, this flamboyant, eccentric character and then when he goes home he could be a happily married man with a family.

 

 

 

Where is he from?

 

You never actually find out whereabouts Emcee is from but I would think he was born in Berlin and has lived there for a long time just because of the way he acts. He seems so comfortable in his surroundings and doesn't seem to knowledge the fact that he's entertaining people with such acts with a Gorilla and lots of woman. Even though he's an eccentric person I recon he looks out for the Kit Kat girls as he's the only male performer. He's like a male role model for the women or could be a friend to cry on his shoulder.

 

 

 

 

What's he like?

 

Emcee is one of the most mysterious characters from 'Cabaret'. Nothing is said bout his life outside of the Kit Kat club. All we know is what he's like in the club. He is eccentric and flamboyant with both his make up and style. He obviously loves to entertain or you wouldn't be able to keep up such an act every night. He seems to have a good relationship with the Kit Kat girls with repetitive acts with them and some close scenes with Sally Bowles. His hair is styled into a males do but his make up is very similar to the girls. This could impress both sexes in the audience which helps get more people interested and curious. He seems to live some sort of double life which really interests me it reminds me of superheros with one life at work and another at home but in this case what does Emcee do during the day as we all know what he does at night.

Leigh Bowery was an Australian fashion designer, club promoter, and performance artist. He was known for the being the proprietor of the hedonistic London nightclub 'Taboo'. Taboo became famous for its defiance of sexual convention.

Looking at the images of Leigh Bowery and Party Monsters you can see the similarities between make up and style. Even the hair is similar with a blond wig and curls. They have the same big red lips and the dots on the face.

Emcee Research

Research For My Contemporary Emcee

Marilyn Manson

After watching Party Monsters and doing some research into the different characters I found Marilyn Manson. His part in the film was small but in general real life his make up and actions are very eccentric. His make up is always pale and dark which is very similar to the make up used by Emcee and the make up in Party Monsters. Even today in this era his style and make up is very unusual and still shocking to some. He actually really reminds me of the Rocky Horror Picture show.

I chose the image below as I really like the black strip across his face because its like a mask its like he's hiding from something and with the one eye lash which is distinct and striking compared to the black background. He also has the same pale make up and I've found from the research I've done the lipstick is always dark and the cupid bow is always accentuated.

The Blitz Kids 80s Club Culture

The Blitz kids were a group of young people who frequented the weekly Blitz club-night in Covent garden, London. They were known for there outrageous style and make up for both sexes.

From researching images and styles I've found there make up traditionally was very pale skin and extravagant eyes. It tended to be dark eyes and dark lips similarly to Marilyn Manson today. Often the male eye brows were painted on very thinly and there hair tended to be either stuck up in different directions probably done with gel. They often had a piece of hair coming down onto there forehead in the shape of a triangle and gelled down in place. Or some of the men wore wigs.
